The World Kiteboarding League in Egypt was a great success. We went to El Gouna, Egypt for the 4rd stop of the world tour this year. I came straight from Tarifa and felt ready for the competition. I had been training a lot in Tarifa. As usual I arrived a few days before and managed to have some warm up session at the spot. We arrived at 4:50 AM in the night so I went for an afternoon session the day after.

I felt really motivated to do well in Egypt as we couldn’t finish the last 2 events in Texel and Turkey. However I had a few hard landings in the choppy conditions here and felt a little pain in my right knee. I thought it was nothing special until it got swollen after the session. Back at the hotel I put ice on it every hour which helped a bit. But anyway I decided to take rest and not kite anymore before the competition. We did some tests with the local fysiotherapist in the hotel and it seemed like a meniscus problem.

Altough I decided to compete as my knee felt better with a brace and tape around it.

There was a qualification event for next year. The top 8 riders of the qualification league go through to the Elite league next year to compete with the world’s best. Last year I already qualified myself for the Elite league, but I decided to compete in the qualification league as well to guarantee my spot for next year. I managed to stay in the top 8 this year and got a place for the 2018 tour! That was my main goal for this event as I knew I could not go big in the Elite league event due to the problems with my knee.

In the Elite league event it’s go hard or go home. Everyone is throwing doubles in every heat and to measure with this level you have to give it all. So I took it easy and just competed to have fun and keep my ranking.

El Gouna is a amazing place for kiteboarding, the wind conditions are perfect and it’s warm all year. I will definitely come back next year!

Cheers,

Rens
